I can’t wait to share with you this natural, plant-based luxury skincare line called Tammy Fender! Each of Tammy’s holistic formulations carries the wisdom of Tammy’s direct experience working in the treatment room and with nature’s precious plant remedies every day. As someone who nurtures wellness and transformation through holistic living, Tammy uses the best of ingredients, and all of her formulates are free of parabens, synthetics, petrochemicals, artificial color, fragrance or ingredients. Before we hear from Tammy herself, I’d like to share my personal top 3 favorites that I can’t live without: 1) Epi Peel, 2) Quintessential Serum, and 3) Restorative Radiance Masque.
Thank you SO much for reminding us that beauty is driven by our lifestyle choices that enhance vitality on every level – body, mind, and spirit. As Tammy said: “We thrive when treating the skin with plant-based ingredients, eating clean, healthy foods, resting soundly and deeply, engaging in exercise, enjoying the wonder of natural world, cultivating curiosity, honoring intuition, seeking and finding happiness, and celebrating a beauty that shines from within.”
What inspired you to start Tammy Fender?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve felt deeply connected to the plant kingdom, and, at the same time, I felt a call to care for others and their happiness. When I became an aesthetician over 25 years ago, I searched everywhere for luxurious, all-natural products to use with my clients. But try I couldn’t find anything with integrity and beauty of what I envisioned. After completing so much research in plant science and traditional healing modalities, I made the leap. I began mixing up my own custom-blended formulas in my kitchen, using only the most potent and pure botanical ingredients.
What is your brand differentiator when it comes to skincare and self-care?
My approach to skincare is holistic, which mean that while we treat the skin, my work with clients is focused on their overall wellbeing. When people are healthy, happy and in balance, it shows in their radiance. In my treatment room, I use amazing holistic remedies from the plant kingdom, which also form the base of my skincare collection, but, at the same time, I work with clients to make those subtle lifestyle changes that enhance overall wellbeing, and shine through a glowing complexion. Usually, my advice tends to be about simplifying, rather than adding to the routine.
What are qualities that you look for in a truly sustainable brand? How is your company taking steps in the sustainability movement?
Our manufacturing process is fairly unique—I love to create our proprietary blends, and put so much effort and focus on the provenance of our ingredients. I know our clients respond to that quality. We’re unwavering in our commitment and love to collaborate with caring, conscientious partners whose farmers, go so far as to test the seeds used in growing many of our plants. We use the whole plant in our extractions whenever possible and house our products in recyclable glass.
Can you share a time you failed and what you learned from it?
I remember working with a consultant some years back who was only interested in scaling up and big growth. She tried to convince me that caring for my clients was ‘just business.’ But it’s never been that for me—all that we do is about nurturing transformation and holistic care, taking care of each client on every level—from the spiritual to the skin—whether in the Spa or through the collection. Staying true to our roots, and our values is the key. I didn’t follow her advice, but it was a good lesson in how a more ambitious approach might actually undermine what makes our brand so special.
Proudest moment to date?
Every time I can help support or even spark deep transformation with my clients or in the treatment room, when I can witness those moments when people make those profound shifts, that is such a gift. Not so long ago, I was treating a beauty editor who was visiting from New York, and she said, “I know you call this a facial, but it’s such an emotional and spiritual experience for me.” Things changed for her, and when I can feel that so deeply and with such gratitude.
What has been some of the most challenging aspects of starting and growing your company?
I’m devoted to having meals and sharing quality time with my family every night. The daily balance can be a challenge, but family is the my biggest strength and greatest happiness.
What is your long-term vision for your company?
Customer service is at the core of what we do. We build our clientele one connection at a time, and I love to work that way.
What advice would you give to women who want to become entrepreneurs or run their own businesses?
There’s no rush to the end. You’re living your passion, and going slowly is for the good of everyone involved. When you are living your dream, you can enjoy the process. Go slowly.
What does women’s empowerment mean to you?
Feeling confident enough to do it your way.
What’s your way to unwind and relax?
I love dancing, spending time at our home in the Bahamas with my family and spending time in my garden, surrounded by plants and flowers, bees and chickens.
Tell us about a philanthropic mission you care about, and maybe how it has been incorporated into your business.
Recently, with our Sanctuary Saturday at-home kits, we’ve donated a portion of the proceeds to Honeybee Conservancy, bringing hives to schools and creating bee sanctuaries. Connecting children with nature is so important to me.
What is the process when it comes to formulating your skincare?
The inspiration behind each of my formulations has come from working hands-on in the with my clients. Typically, I’m in the Spa working every day as an aesthetician, I know exactly what my clients’ need and I combine traditional plant remedies to support and nurture their wellbeing.
